With CBS’s SUPERGIRL one of the latest superhero-based TV shows in development, executive producer Greg Berlanti has been speaking to IGN about this live-action series that will focus on the Man of Steel’s cousin.

Given how Berlanti is also the executive producer on The CW’s ARROW and THE FLASH, and with CBS co-owning The CW, one of the first topics up for discussion was a possible crossover between the three DC-based shows. “So much has to go right for us to be able to make a great show,” he said, “Again, I think of myself as like if I were watching them, I would want to see that. But we have to get so many things right to make a good show and so much of it is luck, unfortunately.”

Whilst ARROW and THE FLASH share the same universe, both shows are also very different in their approach and tone. When pushed on which show SUPERGIRL will be most like, he responded, “I would say tonally closer to FLASH than ARROW. That’s probably the best way to say it.”

Obviously key to any success the show is to have is just who will be taking on the titular role. No official casting has been announced at this stage, although there’s been plenty of talk that THE VAMPIRE DIARIES’ Claire Holt is the frontrunner to play Kara Zor-El, also known as Kara Danvers in the show. Asked on when we can hear something official on that front, Berlanti said, “I hope you’re going to hear about casting soon or we’re not going to be able to make the pilot! As with all these things, there’s only person, right? That’s the thing, I can’t imagine someone other than a lot of our actors playing these roles, so I feel like you’re always just looking for who’s that person.”

In the show, the action will centre on Kara Zor-El as she begins to use her superpowers on earth. Other characters confirmed to appear are foster sister Alexandra Danvers, and other familiar DC names such as Cat Grant, James Olsen, Hank Henshaw and Winslow Schott.

A full season of SUPERGIRL has been ordered by CBS, and Berlanti is developing the show with CHUCK’s Ali Adler.
