Remember last year when there was talk of a buddy movie featuring DC’s Booster Gold and Blue Beetle? Well there finally seems to be some sort of relatively concrete update on that topic.

It was previously reported that Greg Berlanti, who oversees the likes of Arrow, The Flash and Supergirl, would be directing such a film, but then everything went a little quiet on the project. Now, Berlanti has confirmed that he is indeed working on a Booster Gold movie as one of many pies he’s currently got his fingers in.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Berlanti revealed, “I’m attached to a few films now, and one, Booster Gold, is a DC property. Zack Stentz, who wrote an episode of Flash last year, just got the job, so he’s writing the script now. I’d probably direct that, or I would want to.”

So whilst Berlanti has confirmed that he is indeed looking at a Booster Gold film, it’s interesting that there was no mention of Blue Beetle. It could just be a slip of the tongue that Beetle didn’t get a mention, or it could be that current plans now call for a Booster Gold solo outing. As for Zack Stentz, he recently penned the brilliant Kevin Smith-helmed The Good Dinosaur effort of The Flash.

For those not familiar with Booster Gold or Blue Beetle, Booster has been a long-time fan favourite character since he was created by Dan Jurgens back in 1986. Initially living in the 25th century, Michael Jon Carter travels back in time to the present day where he uses his knowledge of future technology to become a cocky, sponsor-adorned, insta-smiling hero.

Where Blue Beetle is concerned, Dan Garrett, Ted Kord and Jaime Reyes have all taken on that particular moniker. The various versions of the character have all had slight differences, such as Garrett’s use of mystical scarab or Kord’s high level of intelligence. And as it happens, both Kord and Reyes have teamed up with Booster Gold over the years. Also, both Booster Gold and Blue Beetle have already been seen in live-action, having both previously appeared in Smallville.

Previously, it was rumoured that both Booster Gold and Blue Beetle could make a small appearance as soon as Zack Snyder’s Justice League: Part One next year, although we’ll have to see how things play out from here, particularly with Berlanti’s non-mention of Blue Beetle.

As ever, expect more on this as it develops.
