It’s been a pretty hectic Star Wars-centric few days for many a fan of a galaxy far, far away, but one of the most shocking and exciting nuggets of news is that Grand Admiral Thrawn is to be a part of Star Wars Rebels’ upcoming third season.

This development comes straight from this past weekend’s Star Wars Celebration, with a Season 3 trailer confirming the presence of this legendary villain. With Rebels existing in the same narrative as the greater Star Wars universe and taking place between Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars (also known as A New Hope to you younger sorts), that means that Thrawn is now officially “canon”. In the animated show, this no-good nefarious sort will be voiced by Lars Mikkelsen, brother of Mads Mikkelsen. In addition to this, it’s been confirmed that an “ancient and powerful” new character will debut and will be voiced by iconic Doctor Who star Tom Baker.

Grand Admiral Thrawn debuted as part of Timothy Zahn’s legendary Thrawn Trilogy of novels back in the early 1990s. He led the remaining Empire forces against the New Republic following the events of Return of the Jedi, proving himself to be a thorough bastard of the highest order as his regimented, calculating style of leadership saw him cause many a problem for those aligned with the Republic. The character would go on to appear in a host of Expanded Universe tale over the following years.

Unfortunately, 2012 saw the entire Star Wars Expanded Universe declared non-canon as part of Lucasfilm’s sale to Disney. With Thrawn now to appear in Star Wars Rebels, that means he’s back and back in a big way.

Rebels will return later this year, and here’s the new Season 3 trailer to whet your appetite:
