After a rocky start, FOX’s GOTHAM seems to be finally gathering some momentum over the last few weeks. Whilst the show appears to be playing a regular game of ‘spot the villain in-waiting,’ another familiar DC name will be joining the show. Fear not, for whilst we’ve been teased with versions of The Penguin, Poison Ivy, Catwoman, The Riddler, and even possible Jokers, plus the impending appearance of a future Two-Face fella, this latest addition is a less in-yer-face addition. As reported by Deadline, HOMELAND’s Morena Baccarin will be joining the series as Dr. Leslie Thompkins.

Whilst not as recognisable as some of the other DC names in the show, Dr. Thompkins is a character that made her comic book debut back in 1976, created by Dennis O’Neil and Dick Giordano. She was initially a colleague of Thomas Wayne’s, comforting Bruce on the night of his parents’ murder. Over the years, her role grew and she was often portrayed as a parental figure to Bruce, much like Alfred is. Once she found out that Bruce was indeed Batman, she felt a sense of responsibility and that she had not been quite the good role model that she thought. In the 1999 NO MAN’S LAND arc, she went a tad rogue, essentially letting Stephanie Brown’s Spoiler die in order to prove a point to the Caped Crusader. In the more recent New 52 world, Dr. Thompkins has been appearing in flashback sequences in RED HOOD AND THE OUTLAWS.

In GOTHAM, Leslie Thompkins will be an ally of Jim Gordon’s who works at Arkham Asylum. Initially a guest role, the character will be expanded to a series regular in Season 2 of the show.
