Following G.I. Joe: Retaliation, many were wondering what lay ahead for the G.I. Joe franchise. Well, it’s now been revealed that there were initially plans for the third G.I. Joe movie to crossover with the Transformers franchise.

This revelation comes from the mouth of D.J. Caruso, the xXx: Return of Xander Cage director who was at one time tasked with helming G.I. Joe 3.

Speaking to Collider, Caruso explained, “Well yeah, but they’re not ready to do yet. That’s exactly what they should do, but they’re not ready to do that, because in fact the script that I was developing, the two worlds sort of collided at the end, and when they read it they were like, ‘We’re not ready to do this yet.’ They will eventually collide those two worlds and it’s probably when Mr. Bay decides he’s done with Transformers.”

Even though those two legendary properties aren’t going to be crossing over just yet doesn’t mean that Caruso is giving up on G.I. Joe 3, as he added, “It came close, but I think what the studio was trying to do was reassess it and so now they’re back to the drawing board, and we’ll be talking again about it. It’s a valuable franchise – not that they didn’t get it right, they just wanna really get it right and see if they can push it to the next level.”

If you remember back to late 2015, it was revealed that plans were underway to have a shared cinematic universe made up of G.I. Joe, Micronauts, Visionaries, ROM: SpaceKnight, and M.A.S.K. All has gone a little quiet on that front, though.

The last we heard on G.I. Joe 3 was that Section 6’s Aaron Berg was working on the screenplay, although that was over a year ago, so who knows where things stand right now.

To date, the G.I. Joe movie franchise has grossed over $675 million with its two films to date.

As ever, expect more on this if and when it develops.
