After Ghostbusters: Afterlife relaunched the beloved supernatural film series last year, Sony Pictures is getting to work on a sequel, this time with filmmaker Gil Kenan in the director’s seat.

Kenan, who served both as writer and producer on the 2021 blockbuster, is due to reunite much of the cast of Afterlife, including stars Mckenna Grace, Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, and Finn Wolfhard. Afterlife director and co-writer Jason Reitman returns to produce; he also co-wrote this sequel with Kenan.

“It’s an absolute honor to pick up the proton pack and step behind the camera for the next chapter of the Spengler family saga. I just wish I could go back to 1984 and tell the kid in the sixth row of the Mann Valley West that one day he was going to get to direct a Ghostbusters film,” said Kenan in a statement.

His prior directorial efforts include the Academy Award-nominated animated feature Monster House, the 2015 remake of the horror classic Poltergeist and most recently, the British fantasy film A Boy Called Christmas.

The Ghostbusters: Afterlife sequel, still untitled but codenamed Fire House (after the Ghostbusters’ iconic base of operations in the 1980s films), is set to release on December 20th, 2023.
