Whilst we now know that there’s only two more season left of Game of Thrones, now comes confirmation that another George R.R. Martin property is to be adapted for TV.

Martin himself has revealed that NBC Universal’s UPC has acquired the rights to his Wild Cards series, with development due to start immediately and what is being planned as the first of several interlocking series. Wild Cards is a collection of anthologies and mosaic novels, meaning there’s a whole host of things to mine from when it comes to adapting this particular property for the small screen.

Melinda M. Snodgrass, who is Martin’s longstanding assistant editor and has worked with him on Wild Cards since the idea first came to fruition, will serve as executive producer on this new project. Where George R.R. Martin is concerned, though, he won’t be directly involved in this new show due to his deal with HBO.

Wilds Cards was first published back in 1986, with twenty-two volumes published to date and another four on the horizon, including one to be released later this month. The larger world in which the tales are set has been ravaged by an alien virus that saw 90% of the infected die, 9% were turned into twisted creatures, and the final 1% were left with unpredictable-yet-extraordinary powers and abilities.

UPC seems like a good fit for Wild Cards, with their programming output involving the likes of Mr. Robot, Suits, The Magicians, 12 Monkeys, Monk and the reboot of Battlestar Galactica.
