After last year’s hugely successful Mad Max: Fury Road, director George Miller revealed that he had enough material to do at least two further Mad Max movies. Well, hopefully you didn’t get your hopes up too much, for Miller has now said that he’s seemingly finished with the franchise.

Speaking to Page 6, the director said, “I won’t make more Mad Max movies. Fury Road was forever getting completed. If you finish one in a year, it’s considered a leap of faith. Start, stop, start again. I’ve shot in Australia in a field of wild flowers and flat red earth when it rained heavily forever. We had to wait 18 months and every return to the US was 27 hours. Those Mad Maxes take forever. I won’t do those any more.”

Additionally, in an interview with Studio 360, Miller seemed open to having someone else take over the series, saying, “There are so many other directors out there. People are directing younger and younger. They’re getting a real sense of cinema very, very early. There are some great directors out there.”

Miller had previously said that a Fury Road sequel was in development, to be titled Mad Max: The Wasteland, and that he was looking at doing several movies. Whether the series’ mainstay helms any further entries or not, it appears that the franchise may very well move forward regardless, although it would be a shame to have a Mad Max film without George Miller on board.

To put it into perspective, Miller has only made nine feature-length movies, with four of those being Mad Max movies. The franchise has played a huge part in his career to date, but it seems that the 70-year-old has some non-Max plans ahead.
