Whilst Warner Brothers’ DC Extended Universe may have gotten off to a so-so start with Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, it appears that the DCEU has been given a major kick in the right direction.
As reported by Bleeding Cool, Geoff Johns has been handed a mighty big promotion where the whole DCEU is concerned. Following the mixed reaction to Batman v Superman, The WB were a little anxious about the direction that the Zack Snyder-heavy cinematic DC realm was taking. To many fans and critics, the tone of both Man of Steel and Batman v Superman felt off; too dark, too cluttered, massively problematic, and even going as far as to seemingly betray some of the very basic fundamentals of key characters (*cough* Superman *cough*).
Johns has been operating as Chief Creative Officer of DC Comics for a little while now, and he’s served as executive producer on both DCEU outings to date, but this promotion sees him now become President of DC Entertainment. Basically, that means he’s more-or-less running the DC Extended Universe. Diane Nelson is also still serving as President, and it’s believed that Johns will ultimately answer to her due to her longevity in the role, but for all extents and purposes Geoff Johns is calling the shots of the DCEU. Nelson's role is apparently largely to act as a go-between for Johns and Warner Brothers.
Why is this a particularly great thing, some may ask? Well Johns is somebody who has written some of the very best comic book arcs of the past few decades, including legendary works such as Green Lantern: Rebirth, Infinite Crisis, Blackest Night, The Flash: Rebirth, Flashpoint and Batman: Earth One. In addition to that, he’s also had involvement in fan favourite shows such as Smallville, Arrow and The Flash.
On the DCEU front, Johns was already confirmed to be penning the screenplay with Ben Affleck for the upcoming Batman solo movie that Affleck will be helming. With him now becoming President of DC Entertainment, that could and should mean that Johns’ fingers will be in many a DCEU pie. Essentially, think of him a little as the DCEU answer to what Marvel Studios did with Joss Whedon during their initial movies, as in he’ll be the one guiding the ship and making sure everything is going in a direction that will excite fans and critics alike.
Here’s hoping that the promotion to President of DC Entertainment for Geoff Johns proves to be a masterstroke from Warner Brothers and a move that firmly kicks up the quality of the studio’s cinematic DC output going forward.SHARE YOUR COMMENTS BELOW OR ON TWITTER @STARBURST_MAG
