Having seemingly been rumoured for as long as we can remember, it looks as if a Gears of War movie is finally happening.

During a livestream event for Gears of War 4, it was revealed that, yes, a film is finally set to happen. The Coalition’s Rod Fergusson told Variety, “As a way to support the franchise, the next logical step was to make the movie. We’d done comics and novels in the past, but the opportunity to work with Universal to bring the movie to life was perfect.”

Fegusson added, “I think you have to let the movies be the movies. They’re two different mediums, and two different audiences in some cases, and I think video game movies in the past have failed because they tried to make a movie for gamers. If you have this great IP with a deep backstory and lots of lore that you can make interesting stories out of, it’s great, but if you just go after the gaming audience then it isn’t going to be a successful movie.”

As alluded to, Universal will be behind this movie, with Ted’s Scott Stuber and Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ Dylan Clark on board to produce.

The Gears of War franchise began life back in 2006 on Xbox 360. The basic premise saw gamers playing as Marcus Fenix, a soldier of the Coalition of Ordered Governments, as he looked to take out the brutal Locust Horde and save all of humanity. Since then, there’s been two sequel games and a prequel, with a third sequel, Gears of War 4, set to be released next week.

As ever, expect more on this as it develops.
