STARBURST is incredibly sad to learn of the passing of Gareth Thomas, who was best known as Roj Blake in the BBC series Blake’s 7, he was 71.

As well as the cult classic, Gareth was an accomplished and prolific actor, with stage work including numerous Royal Shakespeare Company productions. Blake’s 7 made Gareth a household name and a popular personality with fans.

Back in 1998, when STARBURST editor Jordan Royce was opening Fab Café in Manchester, Gareth was guest of honour, as he recalls while mourning the death of the star, “It’s terribly sad to hear about the loss of actor Gareth Thomas who played Roj Blake in BBC TV series Blake 7.
When I opened Fab Café Manchester back in 1998 he was literally the first person I contacted. He was happy to help out and officially opened Fab Café with 3 sold out opening nights.
He would make follow up appearances at Fab during its formative years, and was a lively and anecdotal guest.
The guy didn’t suffer fools, liked a few bevvies, and would keep you out until the early hours. He was a larger than life character, and you always knew he was in the room. He was also very kind hearted, clearly loved his wife, and made time for all of his fans – Even the ones who insisted he read their new B7 scripts!
I am sad to hear this news but the patrons, and friends of Fab Café Manchester can always raise a toast to him in front of the plaque that bears his name behind the bar – Celebrating the opening of the venue.
Like many of a similar age to me Gareth Thomas was a childhood hero, and he will be missed by all of us, and remembered with affection.

Our thoughts go to Gareth’s family and friends.
