Whilst Gareth Edwards is a modern favourite of many a genre fan, it’s now been reported that the director has left the upcoming Godzilla 2.

It was only this past week that brought confirmation that the sequel to Edwards’ 2014 Godzilla would arrive in cinemas on March 22nd, 2019, but it now looks as if the follow-up’s immediate priority will be to find a new director.

Deadline is reporting that Edwards’ departure from Godzilla 2 was an amicable one, with the reason being down to the director wanting to pursue his own original projects. As well as winning plaudits for Monsters and Godzilla, Edwards, of course, is the man tasked with helming Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which is released this coming December.

All that we know about Godzilla 2 is that it will bring many a classic beastie to the big screen, with Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidora all expected to battle the King of the Monsters.

Following Godzilla 2 will be May 2020’s Godzilla vs Kong. First up, though, will be Kong: Skull Island, released March 10th, 2017, which should feature certain nods and winks to Big G ahead of 2020’s hotly-anticipated crossover movie.
