It’s a sad day for fans for Warhammer Online as just after the title’s fifth anniversary it has been announced the game only has several months to live. December the 18th will see the end for the dark fantasy MMO.

The official statement thanked its fans for their dedication and support over the years while clarifying the exact reasons why it will be shutting down: The licencing deal between Mythic and Games Workshop is coming to an end. In light of this fact the development team have confirmed that they will be removing the ability to auto-renew accounts and sell three month game time codes.

Despite struggling under a large number of flaws over the years from lack of balance between the numbers on each faction side and a problematic crafting system, it’s an achievement to see the game lasted so long. Furthermore, Mythic have made it clear that this conclusion was born of no ill will between themselves and Games Workshop citing a “amazing relationship” working with them, and producer Carrie Couskos’ fondness of the universe. Stating that it has been “a tremendous honor to work with Games Workshop” as she detailed her thoughts on the past and the title’s closure. Stating that the game was both a learning experience for the developers, and how it “struck boldly” with a number of the game’s original features now being standard expectations in MMOs.

With Eternal Crusade on the way and many new titles focusing upon the 41st millennium over the age of orks, flintlocks and warlocks, who knows when we’ll see another MMO in this universe again.
