Dark Millennium News

One of the biggest losses when publisher THQ went under was the much anticipated MMO Dark Millennium. Set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe it was to be the first real foray by space marines into an online setting. After the company’s financial troubles forced it to be scaled back to an offline game and then cancelled entirely, only a few trailers remained showing what we might have gotten.

At least until now.

One of the animators working on the game, Jeremy Fones, put together an animation reel displaying his work. While some contained Darksiders animation kills and a few Halo sequences, the majority consisted of Dark Millennium enemies and characters. With varying levels of completion, sequences both simple and complex, they give a much clearer idea of the title’s art style than suggested in trailers. Far more cartoonish than some details had previously suggested, many characters share artistic design elements with those of World of Warcraft. Beyond just the art style, influences are clear with the rubbery animations of vehicles, notably bikes, which share distinct elements with vehicles found in Blizzard’s online giant.

Other interesting details which can be seen are the fate of the Waround Titan prominently featured in several of the game’s trailers. As a Khorne Berserker introduces an axe to an Imperial Guardsman’s cranium, its towering fauna covered wreck can be seen towering in the background.

It’s a short video, only revealing minor details about the title, but none the less an interesting look at what might have been.
