Final Fantasy and Final Mission New Art

Released onto Twitter recently, former Squaresoft Aki Takashi displayed a number of unused sketches from SNES era titles. For all its praise for graphical quality, gameplay and characters, one unspoken quality of the Final Fantasy series has always been its graphical style. The emotions and themes of any part of a game rely heavily upon their visual look, and in the days of Final Fantasy IV the only way to truly explore this was through the works of Nomura Tetsuya.

While these sketches shown are hardly ground-breaking discoveries, they are a part of the company and many series’ history. Those from Final Fantasy show its main characters in film poster-esque poses while Front Mission is more clearly emphasising individuals and are better shaded.

Each of them was cleaned up to a degree by Aki before being presented online, with some displaying brief notes about where they were to be used or Nomura’s signature.
