In a quite unexpected move Andrew Spinks, known to Terraria fans by the handle Redigit, has revealed that a future mystery project he is working on is Terraria 2. Despite previously attempting to leave Terraria behind early last year and move onto other projects, as well as the massive 1.2 patch to supposedly serve as a finishing send-off to the title, it seems that he’s not against working on Terraria itself. Instead he apparently wants fresh start to attempt new things.
Revealed in an interview with Rock Paper Shotgun, Spinks outlined that his plans were to create far bigger worlds than we had seen previously, specifically that “I really want to have infinite worlds so you’re not just stuck to one world. You can travel anywhere. I want more biome diversity in that, too. There’s a lot of stuff .” Furthermore, he spoke of the idea of specific plans for how loot in the title works and progression within the new game, suggesting something bigger than what we had before.
Owners of the original title should be happy to know that apparently 1.2 isn’t the end despite what many thought. While Spinks confirmed that it was “probably gonna be the last seven-month update” to the first game, there were many things which he was unable to add into the late update. He made specific examples of the lack of an end-game boss, progression in the conclusion and gave the suggestion of a Halloween update to the game. Furthermore, one possibility they were exploring was hiring a small team of developers to handle future updates on Terraria while they worked on creating the sequel.
The interview concluded with the statement that Spinks would like to repeat what he did with the first game. Terraria was made in “four months, and I only paid, like, not very much – and that was just for the sound.” He stated that his reasons for doing this were a personal preference and that he wishes to “never be in a position where I need to get money to fund my projects.”
This is interesting news indeed as it means there’s still life left in the original game beyond the inclusion of the Crimson and the hundreds of other items added in the latest patch. Furthermore, with so many ideas and details based upon reworking the game at the foundations, we could and up looking at something very different than the current title.
Where this puts Starbound in terms of patching and updates is anyone’s guess.
