Star Citizen News

In yet another success for Cloud Imperium Games Corporation, the yet to be released Star Citizen has crossed yet another stretch goal. Originally having found success on Kickstarter, quadrupling its $500,000 goal through Kickstarter donations alone, the title has continued to find support from fan donations seeking the game of their dreams.

This latest stretch goal opens up a new system for the game, the Cano System which contains four worlds, one of which has been colonised. The planet, Carteyna, is described as a “traditional waterworld” but due to its rotation it retains icy landmasses across its northern hemisphere. Multiple terraforming efforts were made, only to be met with failure each time and then halted entirely when it was realised the planet was developing alien life.

The Star Citizen’s success is one of a several crowd funding campaigns which has allowed genres or series with little support from their publishers to flourish. Other major examples include Mighty No. 9 and the recently released Broken Age, but Star Citizen is arguably the most ambitious of all these. Combining together two expensive open, persistent universes with MMO elements and all presented through first person space combat. Admittedly, having the same man who designed Freelancer and Wing Commander: Privateer working on it tends to engender a degree of faith in any star combat title. Well, so long as you ignore the Wing Commander film anyway.

With the project already seven percent into its next goal, adding potentially yet another system to its already vast network of worlds, fans may see the title reaching its $40,000,000 goal.
