The 3DS ZELDA title that Nintendo announced back in 2011 is confirmed to be a new game set in the universe of 1992’s LEGEND OF ZELDA: A LINK TO THE PAST.

Nintendo of America’s President, Reggie Fils-Aime, broke the news on today’s edition of Nintendo Direct.

“What are developers want to achieve in this new Zelda game is to reinvigorate the flat 2D world of A Link to the Past with a sense of height and volume using the three dimensional display of the Nintendo 3DS,” said Fills-Aime.  “Our developers can utilize height differences in dungeons as a puzzle solving mechanic.”

The height difference mechanic was displayed in the video, as was a new feature that allows Link to become a drawing and move along walls. This mechanic will “play a key role” in solving the game’s puzzles.

The game, which is currently titled THE LEGEND OF ZELDA: A LINK TO THE PAST 2 in Japan, will be released this holiday season. It will feature an original storyline and entirely new dungeons.

A 3D video of the game will be available on the eShop later today.
