Times have not been good for fans of the Legacy of Kain series, especially those who loved the overly complex time travelling storyline. After an entire console generation without an instalment, the franchise recently re-emerged as Nosgoth, a free-to-play multiplayer title. With no apparent strong story, a staple of the series, and focusing upon a comparatively minor footnote in the lore, reception has been very mixed. Despite all this, it does seem that there is some hope yet for jaded fans wanting a return to the classic games.

In response to a question on their Facebook page, Nosgoth’s community manager has stated that there is the possibility of a Legacy of Kain title returning again sometime in the future. In their response they stated the following:

“The decision to make any game is based on a number of factors – the right idea, the right team, the right market conditions all need to be in place to make it happen. The Legacy of Kain franchise is one we are huge fans of and we would love to bring another narrative experience in that world if all the elements were in place.

That said, the right combination of circumstances aren’t in place right now. We’re very aware that if and when we make a single player game it needs to be a worthy successor, and we will wait until we’re confident that this is going to be possible.”

This can ultimately be taken two ways. The first is that the team does care about the quality behind the titles. It’s very true that it would take a very specific approach to make such a title succeed. Even ignoring the gothic artistic style and complex story, pitching a game to continue the series after such a lengthy departure would be difficult. They do appreciate the franchise, but they are just waiting for the right time.

The other is that these are empty words intended to placate fans. Along with the sudden cancellation of The Dark Prophecy, a direct follow-up to the successful Defiance in 2004, there was also the equally sudden cancellation of Dead Sun just last year. A title which featured a major step forwards graphically and had found a way to make a start open to fans without betraying the established story. The project was three years in development but, according to leaked information, was cancelled without any explained reason just one year before Nosgoth’s sudden announcement.

Whatever is the case however, this news at least leaves the possibility open for a series return sometime in the future.
