With the X-Men-based TV series Legion arriving on the small screen next year, many longtime X-fans have been wondering whether the series will directly connect to the larger cinematic X-Men franchise. Well Bryan Singer has recently been discussing that very matter…

Speaking at the Edinburgh Television Festival, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Singer was asked on whether Legion will somehow tie-in with the X-movie franchise, to which explained that the show was “part of the X-Men universe, but when you watched it, you wouldn’t have to label it, it could exist completely on its own.” He then added how Legion and another currently-untitled series “will relate to future X-Men movies” and they will have a “really ambitious and fun and very unique storyline.”

That other series mentioned was one confirmed back in July, with the untitled show set to focus on two regular parents whose children have mutant powers. With the government hot on their heels, the family have to go on the run and end up joining a group of underground mutants.

Singer is more well-versed than most when it comes to the future of the X-Men movie series and anything potentially related to it, with him having directed X-Men, X2, X-Men: Days of Future Past and this year’s X-Men: Apocalypse.

As for Legion, the series will focus on the troubled David Haller, played by The Guest’s Dan Stevens. The son of Charles Xavier, David has battled mental illness for years and has been in and out of psychiatric hospitals on a regular basis. After an encounter with a fellow patient, David soon starts to realise that maybe the voices he’s been hearing in his head for all these years may well be more real than was first thought. Joining Stevens is Parks and Recreation’s Aubrey Plaza and Fargo duo Rachel Keller and Jean Smart. To debut on FX next year, Legion is being handled by Fargo’s Noah Hawley.
