Pretty much every single one of us here at Moonbase Alpha are huge Spider-Man fans. As such, we’re still on a massive high after yesterday’s amazing (no pun intended) news of ol’ Webhead finally being brought into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Now comes some further news on how Spidey will be handled.

The Hollywood Reporter has word that this version of everyone’s favourite Wallcrawler will be a “much younger” actor than Andrew Garfield. It’s already been said that 31-year-old Garfield will not be back in the famed red and blue duds, which is a little bit of a shame because he was actually a rather good Peter Parker and Spider-Man. Still, if this new version of Spidey is to be completely separate to anything that we’ve seen before, as in Sam Raimi’s trilogy or Marc Webb’s pair of films, then a clean break needs to be made, meaning Garfield’s days as Webhead must come to an end.

It’s also important to realise that Peter Parker is a teenager. In a world of hulked up heroes and gods, when it comes down to it Spider-Man is just a kid with extraordinary powers and a huge will to do the right thing. Yes, Peter has aged over the years, but this is still somebody who grew up essentially idolising these larger than life heroes. And when it comes to the CIVIL WAR comic book arc, which will be loosely adapted for CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR in which Spidey will make his MCU debut, Spider-Man is arguably the key character to the whole thing. Along with Captain America and Iron Man, Spider-Man is vital to the tale, with him essentially stuck in the middle of Steve Rogers and Tony Stark and also serving as an ‘in’ for the audience.

As well as news that this new Peter Parker will be played by a younger actor than Garfield, it’s also been revealed that previous producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach will serve as executive producers on the new solo Spider-Man movie that will follow in 2017. Director of the previous AMAZING SPIDER-MAN movies, Marc Webb, will not be back, though.

With all of these new developments finally coming to fruition, it’s believed that this could just be the first move in Marvel Studios eventually reacquiring the full cinematic rights to the Spider-Man character and his world. At the moment, Sony Pictures still has creative input and will handle distribution of the solo Spidey film.

Additionally, Variety is reporting that Sony is still planning on moving forward with THE SINISTER SIX and VENOM in some form. It goes without saying, THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 3 and THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 4 are now off the table. Whether Sony’s planned Spidey spin-off films will ever actually happen, that remains to be seen.

As it stands, Spider-Man will make his MCU bow in the Russo brothers CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR on May 6th, 2016 in a film that will also feature Captain America, Iron Man, Black Widow, Black Panther, Winter Soldier, Hawkeye, and likely Vision and The Falcon. Following that, the Wallcrawler’s solo film is set for a July 28th, 2017 release.

Now let the speculation begin on just who will be next to don the red and blue tights. Given CAP 3’s April start, we should hopefully hear some concrete casting news over the next few months.
