After months of speculation, the cast for David Ayer’s SUICIDE SQUAD has finally been revealed. Warner Brothers’ Greg Silverman broke the news, and yes, we have a new Joker.

As rumoured last month, DALLAS BUYERS CLUB’s Jared Leto will be playing the Clown Prince of Crime, The Joker, in the villain-centric film. Similarly suggested last month, THE WOLF OF WALL STREET’s Margot Robbie will be playing his main squeeze, Harley Quinn. The Fresh Prince himself, Will Smith, will be playing Floyd Lawton, aka master assassin Deadshot, whilst THE DARK KNIGHT RISES’ Tom Hardy will be playing Rick Flag, often depicted as the leader of the Suicide Squad. A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD’s Jai Courtney will be playing Captain Boomerang, and ANNA KARENINA’s Cara Delevingne will be playing Enchantress. It’s also presumed that Jesse Eisenberg will reprise his Lex Luthor role from the upcoming BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE.

So there we have it, our cinematic Task Force X. The team’s line-up is a little different to the characters that were being speculated for the film previously, although Ayer had been working on script rewriters since officially boarding the project a month or so ago. Those rewrites seemed to mainly be in order to incorporate The Joker and Harley Quinn into the film, but it seems that some other changes were made, with Blockbuster, Multiplex, Jaculi, and Vixen all seemingly dropping out. Still, further characters could always be announced at a later stage.

On this news, Silverman said, “The Warner Brothers roots are deep on this one. David Ayer returns to the studio where he wrote TRAINING DAY and brings his incredible ability to craft multidimensional villains to this iconic DC property with a cast of long-time Warner collaborators Will Smith and Tom Hardy, and other new and returning favourites: Margot, Jared, Jai and Cara. We look forward to seeing this terrific ensemble, under Ayer’s amazing guidance, give new meaning to what it means to be a villain and what it means to be a hero.”

For those unfamiliar with the Suicide Squad, the group originally debuted way back in 1959. They’re essentially a rotating group of villains who have to carry out sensitive missions for the US government. Often with some form of bomb device attached to them or put in them, if the villains don’t comply then they go kaput.

SUICIDE SQUAD will start shooting in April, with an August 5th, 2016 release planned.
