With Season 3 of The CW’s ARROW having added several new faces over the last week or two, now comes word that former Man of Steel, Brandon Routh, has signed on to play Ray Palmer, aka The Atom, in the Emerald Archer show.

TV Line broke the news, going on to say that Palmer will be a love interest for Emily Bett Rickards’ Felicity Smoak and will also become the new head of Queen Consolidated. A couple of weeks ago, it was reported that the show was to introduce a character called Daniel (purely a placeholder name), who was described as “20something gent — a major recurring character for Season 3 — is a handsome, enigmatic and highly intelligent entrepreneur developing groundbreaking technology. (Picture a business magnate in Ryan Gosling’s body.) Though exuding charm and confidence in public, he privately harbors a tragic past that will drive him to become a tech-powered superhero. Watch for this formidable fella to be a love interest for Felicity and a rival of Oliver’s – both personally and professionally.” Initially it was thought that ‘Daniel’ may end up being the Blue Beetle. Apparently not.

The Atom is a character first introduced in 1961, created by Julius Schwartz, Gardner Fox and Gil Kane. Over the years he’s been a member of both the Teen Titans and the Justice League, and his main power is the ability to shrink to subatomic sizes. As it happens, one of his biggest adversaries is Deathstroke, played by Manu Bennett in ARROW. Whether this is brought up in the show remains to be seen.

ARROW returns to The CW on Wednesday, 8th October, with a UK return expected to follow shortly after that date.
