Well, well, well. This is all a little interesting.

Fresh from Comic-Con, the title of the Ezra Miller-headlined Flash movie has now been confirmed as being Flashpoint.

Why is that particularly noteworthy? Well, in the DC comic book realm, Geoff Johns’ iconic 2011 Flashpoint was a huge story arc that changed the entire landscape of the DC world. To give a brief breakdown of that comic book arc, Flashpoint saw Barry Allen go back in time to stop his mother from being killed. What the Scarlet Speedster didn’t bargain on, though, was just how much this decision would affect the present day. Not only did Barry no longer have his superpowers, but the rest of DC’s famed heroes also saw their lives hugely altered due to this alternative timeline; Bruce Wayne died that night in Crime Alley; Thomas Wayne became an aggressive, alcoholic Batman; Martha Wayne was driven to insanity and became The Joker; Green Arrow is a weapons dealer ala certain incarnations of Tony Stark; Superman was captured by the government upon crash-landing from Krypton; Captain Cold is actually the protector of Central City; Wonder Woman’s Amazons and Aquaman’s Atlanteans are at brutal war with each other; and, most disappointingly, Cyborg is seen as the planet’s biggest hero. And let’s face it, none of us particularly like Cyborg. Sorry Vic, but you’ll always be a Titan at best to us.

So, that’s Flashpoint in a nutshell. Basically, it was done as a way of setting up an alternate reality. Which, in the lens of Warner Brothers’ DC Extended Universe, could mean that The WB could effectively rewrite their continuity (already!) and use Flashpoint to fix any (many!) issues that they so choose. For fans of The CW’s Flash, you’ll have seen the Flashpoint arc come in to play in the show’s third season, with Grant Gustin’s Barry Allen going back in time to stop his mother’s murder; in turn creating a completely altered present-day timeline.

Of course, just what titling Ezra Miller’s solo picture as Flashpoint really means remains to be seen. It could just be a mere coincidence or just a swanky title that sounded good. Or, y’know, it could be that Warner Brothers has seen the disappointing response to Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad, and have got itchy feet to the point where they’re going to use the Sultan of Speed to attempt to right some wrongs.

At this stage, mind, Flashpoint still doesn’t have a release date. If you remember back, originally the film was scheduled for February 2018… until all sorts of problems started to plague the project. Firstly, director Seth Grahame-Smith departed the movie due to creative differences. In his place stepped Dope’s Rick Famuyiwa, who then also left the film earlier this year due to the same issue of creative differences. So, despite the likes of Sam Raimi, Matthew Vaughn, and Robert Zemeckis being linked to the directing gig, Flashpoint is still on the hunt for a new director at this point in time.

Regardless of this confusion surrounding his own picture, Miller’s Flash will be present and have a pivotal role to play when the Justice League assembles this November.

As ever, expect more on Flashpoint as we get it.
