Fresh off the rumour mill was the news that Marvel would be cancelling their upcoming FANTASTIC FOUR; speculation which was backed up by solicitation for the fourth and, it would seem, final hardcover for the current FF series. At Marvel’s own panel at this year’s New York Comic-Con, it was confirmed that everybody’s favourite foursome would indeed be coming to an end in the spring of 2015.

Going against the modern trend in comics, FF will be reverting to its old numbering system as it enters its last year. Titled THE END IS FOREVER, FF will end with issue #645, with the solicit for the hardcover reading: “THE END IS FOUREVER! Witness the closing act on the First Family of the Marvel Universe! THE INVADERS meet the FANTASTIC FOUR as the hunt for REED RICHARDS and the missing kids of the FUTURE FOUNDATION continues. Meanwhile the mastermind behind everything unveils his ultimate plan. But how does FRANKLIN RICHARDS factor in? And how does this all lead to…The END?! Collecting FANTASTIC FOUR #642-644 and the Triple Sized Final Issue 645!”

The specific reason behind Marvel’s move wasn’t given, though writer James Robinson has stated that the series is ”going away for a little while.” It’s believed that ongoing disputes between Marvel and 20th Century Fox, along with sales figures, are behind the decision.

It’s hard to imagine a Marvel without the FF in tow, so we’ll expect to see them sooner rather than later. For now though, best get ready to say goodbye to Marvel’s first family.
