With Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters currently in cinemas across the globe, it’s been confirmed that a sequel will be happening at some point in the future.

As is ever the case, a sequel was always likely if the film did well at the box office. That said, the film hasn’t exactly set the box office on fire during its opening week, although Ghostbusters is the highest-opening live-action comedy in over a year. The plans for a sequel were confirmed from Sony’s Rory Bruer.

Bruer, President of Worldwide Distribution at Sony Pictures, told The Wrap, “The Ghostbusters is alive and well. I expect Ghostbusters to become an important brand and franchise. While nothing has been officially announced yet, there’s no doubt in my mind that it will happen.”

Following the largely negative press ahead of the film’s release, Ghostbusters has won over many doubting fans and critics. That said, many have also not taken too fondly to the redo (for the record, you can find our review here).

During its opening week, Ghostbusters has taken $65 million globally. The film cost $144 million to put together.
