For moviegoers of a certain vintage, the likes of the Cannonball Run and the Smokey and the Bandit films are huge favourites. We mean, it doesn’t really get much cooler than classic Burt Reynolds, right? Well, now comes word on Cannonball Run being in line to get the remake treatment.

As reported by Deadline, Etan Cohen has been brought in by Warner Brothers to pen and direct a redo of 1981’s Cannonball Run. The original itself was classified as an “illegal cross-country race where the participants were not above playing dirty tricks on one another”, and the film was crammed with an all-star cast consisting of the likes of Burt Reynolds, Roger Moore, Farrah Fawcett, Dom DeLuise, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Jackie Chan, and Adrienne Barbeau. Cannonball Run and its 1984 sequel were directed by stuntman Hal Needham, and a third film, Speed Zone, was released in 1989.

Warners previously purchased the rights to Cannonball Run and any sequels or remakes from Brock Yates, the Hal Needham Estate and Fortune Star LTD, with the studio now having brought in Cohen to handle this redo. Cohen is best known for writing and directing the Will Ferrell-starring Get Hard, as well as having writing credits for the likes of Tropic Thunder and Men in Black 3.

As ever, expect more on this as it develops.
