Nottingham-based publisher Themeborne will unveil the latest prototype of their debut game Escape the Dark Castle at booth G34 this UK Games Expo.

Inspired by the TV programme Knightmare, Fighting Fantasy gamebooks, old-school D&D, and Heroquest, Escape the Dark Castle brings the atmosphere and adventure of dark fantasy to the tabletop in a unique way – with evocative monochrome art and simple, approachable rules.

It’s a cooperative game for 1-4 players which takes two minutes to set up and 30 minutes to play. Players take on the roles of wretched prisoners, wrongfully incarcerated in the depths of The Dark Castle, they have broken free from their cells and must work together to overcome horrors, traps, and challenges on a desperate quest to escape.

As immersive chapter cards are revealed one by one, the game takes on the form of a shared storybook experience. The large, randomised deck means the prisoners’ journey through the castle will be different every time, and the decisions they make will change how each encounter plays out.

From lurching ghouls to crooked guardsmen, the prisoners will never know what lies around the next corner, and must gather plenty of useful items along the way. From stale bread to powerful relics, players will need all the help they can get to Escape the Dark Castle

The friendly team at Themeborne will be running demos throughout the show and Expo attendees will have the chance to make discounted early-bird Kickstarter pledges.
