The 70th Edinburgh International Film Festival takes place between June 15th-26th and has a host of films to tempt genre fans among its numerous strands.

Highlander (1986) gets a 30th-anniversary celebration at a gala screening, as does UK premiere of Finding Dory.

Of the new films to watch out for, we recommend Welsh-language revenge thriller The Library Suicides (Y Llyfrgell), Yeon Sang-ho’s Seoul Station (Seoulyeok), a horrific animated zombie apocalypse.

Kevin Smith’s eagerly-awaited killer Bratzis flick Yoga Hosers. The highly intriguing musical fantasy The Lure (Córki Dancingu) in which a pair of mermaids become a sensation at a Warsaw burlesque club. Psychological supernatural thriller The Man Who Was Thursday. There’s also the World Premiere of new British horror film First Born. Horror anthology Holidays and ‘60s-style occult sexploitation chiller The Love Witch. While The Rezort is the latest zombie-based terror from Outpost director Steve Barker

A major draw for STARBURST readers is the strand of movies: ‘POW!!! Live action comic strip adaptations: the first generation’. Every film is a classic, and well worth seeing. The full line-up is: Corrado Farina’s Baba Yaga (1973), Roger Vadim’s psychedelic masterpiece Barbarella (1968), the still-brilliantly camp Batman: The Movie (1966), Mario Bava’s Danger: Diabolik (1968), Mike Hodges’ fan-favourite Flash Gordon (1980),  Friday Foster (1975), starring Pam Grier and Yaphet Kotto, Golgo 13 (1973), Lone Wolf and Cub: Sword of Vengeance (1972), Modesty Blaise (1966), Robert Alman’s misfire musical Popeye (1980) starring Robin Williams and Shelley Duvall, and Tintin and the Mystery of the Golden Fleece (1961). There’s also an accompanying discussion event on the history and evolution of the comic strip adaptation.
There’s also a rare chance to catch Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) projected from a 70mm print is certainly something to catch. Another special event sees Steven Spielberg’s alien weepie E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (1982) accompanied by a live score by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra.

Among the special guest appearances are ‘In Person’ events with writer/director Kevin Smith and Dominique Pinon, star of such films as Delicatessen and Alien: Resurrection.
