We’ve known that a sequel was on the way for Doug Liman’s 2014 Edge of Tomorrow, but now comes word that the film will actually be both a sequel and a prequel.

Liman himself, who will be returning to helm this new movie, explained to Collider, “That is the only sequel that I’m considering doing. It’s because, first of all, the story is so amazing – much better than the original film, and I loved and loved the original film – and second of all, it’s a sequel that’s a prequel.”

Speaking to IGN, Liman added, “It’s going to revolutionize how people make sequels. It really will.”

No real details are known on how this next movie will pan out, but given the time-travel and Groundhog Day-esque elements of the first film, there’s near-enough endless possibilities to make this a prequel and a sequel.

All that’s known right now about Edge of Tomorrow 2 is that, as well as Doug Liman returning, Race’s Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse are working on the screenplay, with returns also confirmed for Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt.
