After months of speculation by fans of Games Workshop’s grim dark Old World, an early release has finally confirmed that The Creative Assembly is set to tackle TOTAL WAR: WARHAMMER. The news was revealed in a leak on twcenter.net where one member combing through an early copy of THE ART OF TOTAL WAR highlighted a specific particular passage, “We’re also experimenting with this in the mobile space, with TOTAL WAR: KINGDOM, and taking the series to a fantasy setting with TOTAL WAR: WARHAMMER.”

To further back this up, it was posted with an assortment of photographs of the book’s cover and its interior:

While long thought to be on the horizon, this is the first solid confirmation that the TOTAL WAR series would be moving to a fantasy setting for a new instalment. Despite the successes of the DAWN OF WAR franchise, a developer’s last outing into WARHAMMER FANTASY was met with a tepid response among fans. Even today opinions of WARHAMMER: MARK OF CHAOS are strongly divisive at best and better forgotten by many, so putting the crew behind the ever successful TOTAL WAR franchise could finally offer the experience fans want.

The major question now is when the game will be set, prior to or following the ongoing END TIMES event. At this moment in time, Games Workshop’s writers are set upon tearing down most of the Old World and destroying half the planet, with several major factions having been permanently disbanded and entire continents destroyed. Both offer many opportunities for stories and new units, and even prior to this there are countless major wars to work with.

Whatever the case, we can only hope that the end product will feature substantially less bugs and bad A.I. than TOTAL WAR: ROME II.
