With Spider-Man now confirmed to be a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe from CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVL WAR onwards, now comes word on just who will write and direct Webhead’s first solo film, currently set for a 2017 release.

Latino Review is reporting that Drew Goddard will be responsible for both writing and directing the new Spidey film, which is said to be part of a new trilogy that will be dubbed SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN. If this new story is to believed (and Latino Review are usually on the money with this stuff), this new trilogy will see a film released over consecutive summers.

Goddard was already working on the spin-off SINISTER SIX movie when Spidey was still purely under Sony Pictures’ control. As such, it’s believed that the first of these new Spider-Man solo efforts will actually involve the Sinister Six team in some form. One other interesting note included with this latest report is that Spider-Man will at one point have to fight Iron Man in an initiation of sorts to join The Avengers.

Details coming out at this stage is that there will be no new origin story for the Wallcrawler. As previously revealed, Andrew Garfield will not be back and there will indeed by a new actor donning the iconic red and blue duds. Peter Parker will be in high school and the plan is for him to grow into the Spider-Man role and into his own hero with each passing film appearance.

No Peter Parker/Spider-Man casting is expected to happen for a few months yet, although production starts on CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR in April. Parker will debut in that film when it hits screens on May 6th, 2016 and then get his own solo film on July 28th, 2017.

Expect more on this as it develops.
