In the wake of GAME OF THRONES’ massive success, MTV giving the greenlight on a small screen adaptation of Terry Brooks’ SHANNARA series came as no surprise. THRONES, it seems, may just have ushered in a golden age of fantasy television. Fantasy on the silver screen, however, is as much a trend as the painful attempts to put life in the slasher subgenre.

Anne McCaffrey’s popular DRAGONRIDERS OF PERN series is set to swoop onto the big screen, courtesy of Warner Bros. While the franchise may seem out of touch by today’s standards, it remains a cornerstone of fantasy, one that has been imitated many times over. The series blended sci-fi and fantasy elements, set on Pern, of course, and was concerned with Dragonriders, who form a telepathic bond with their dragons in order to battle an airborne spore that threatens the environment.

Deadline has reported that Warner Bros. exec Drew Crevello (who worked on the X-MEN movie franchise) and producer Julia Spiro are involved in the development of the DRAGONRIDERS film. While the project gained steam a few years ago, with X2 screenwriter David Hayter on board, it would appear it’s being built up from scratch.

Few fantasy fans will argue that any franchise is sacrosanct, which one will be next? Our money is on David Eddings.
