STARBURST is sad to hear that the popular Doctor Who Experience venue in Cardiff Bay – adjacent to the Roath Lock Studios where the series is (occasionally) made – is to close next year. BBC Worldwide have announced today “The Doctor Who Experience has enjoyed a fantastic five-year run in Cardiff Bay but, sadly, our five-year sub-lease from the City of Cardiff Council will come to an end in Summer 2017.”

The Experience – which combined an interactive visitor adventure featuring then-Doctor Matt Smith and later his successor Peter Capaldi – with two floors of props and costumes both from the current/recent series and many renovated costumes from the ‘classic’ run – opened in July 2012 with the building itself comprising a revolutionary specially-constructed steal-beamed frame with a cover stretched across the entire building. Doctor Who fans from all over the world have flocked to Experience since it opened and the BBC have confirmed that, at the moment, there are no plans for the Experience to be relocated or for a similar or even down-sized attraction being set up elsewhere.

STARBURST had the pleasure of visiting the Experience during its construction and again on its official opening day (and has been back more than once since) and is genuinely sorry  to hear of its imminent demise. Its colourful frontage – and the TARDIS prop perched at the nearby quayside, welcoming visitors travelling from across the Bay – will be much-missed from the Cardiff landscape.
