Last month saw director Rupert Wyatt walk away from 20th Century Fox’s upcoming Gambit movie, but it looks like the studio could be close to finding his replacement.

Deadline is reporting that Doug Liman, best known for The Bourne Identity, Looper and Edge of Tomorrow, is the man currently in the frame, largely down to star Channing Tatum actively campaigning to have Liman join the project. One major issue could be that Liman is expected to be massively tied up with post-production on Tom Cruise’s Mena ahead of its January 2017 release. Then there’s also the possibility that he could end up back with Cruise for Edge of Tomorrow 2 and Luna Park.

Previously, the plan for Gambit was to start production as early as this month, ahead of the film’s October 7th, 2016 release date. Whether that release date ends up pushed back, we’ll have to see, although it does look likely at this stage.

Channing Tatum and Lea Seydoux are both still on board for Gambit, but the film is in desperate need of finding itself a director before things can start moving forward again.

As ever, expect more on this as it develops.
