Remember that really good Divergent movie series? No, no you don’t. That’s because, for the most part, the cinematic adaptation of the famed YA novels has been pretty atrocious. And clearly we’re not alone in thinking that, for the majority of audiences have also seemingly agreed with us. As such, there’s a change ahead in where the movie franchise is heading.

Variety has word that the final entry in The Divergent Series, known as Ascendant, has actually been pulled from its planned cinema release. That film was initially set for a big screen release in June of next year, but instead it will now be a direct-to-TV movie. Following that, the franchise will spin off into a TV series of its own. Given the lacklustre box office reception and the big money that’s in TV right now, this actually seems like a sensible movie for Divergent.

It’s not yet known whether stars such as Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Ansel Elgort and Miles Teller will be returning for this final movie. Lionsgate’s TV division will be handling the subsequent TV series, which is likely to focus on an entirely new bunch of characters. The final movie in the franchise would serve as a conclusion to the established characters’ arcs whilst also acting as a launching pad for some newcomers.

There’s no word yet on whether the Divergent TV series will find a home on regular TV or if it may join the many shows that are now turning up on streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime.
