In a worrying development for Warner Brothers’ DC Extended Universe, director Rick Famuyima has left The Flash over the ever-familiar “creative differences”.

What makes this particularly worrying is that the Dope helmer is the second director to depart the project this year. Famuyiwa replaced Seth Grahame-Smith back in April, with Grahame-Smith also not keen on the creative direction that Warners wanted to take with their Ezra Miller-starrer.

In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, Famuyiwa explained his departure: “When I was approached by Warner Bros. and DC about the possibility of directing The Flash, I was excited about the opportunity to enter this amazing world of characters that I loved growing up, and still do to this da. I was also excited to work with Ezra Miller, who is a phenomenal young actor. I pitched a version of the film in line with my voice, humour, and heart. While it’s disappointing that we couldn’t come together creatively on the project, I remain grateful for the opportunity. I will continue to look for opportunities to tell stories that speak to a fresh generational, topical, and multicultural point of view. I wish Warner Brothers, DC, Jon Berg, Geoff Johns, and Ezra Miller all the best as they continue their journey into the speed force.”

The plan for The Flash was for production to start in Spring 2017 ahead of a 2018 release date. More recently, star Miller has been tied down with new commitments already for next summer, and with the loss of Rick Famuyiwa, that means that there could well be some delays for the Scarlet Speedster’s solo movie.

Up next for Ezra Miller’s Flash is a role in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, which will hit the big screen in November 2017.
