With a Han Solo-centric movie part of the upcoming Star Wars schedule, writer and producer Lawrence Kasdan has been discussing the film with The Playlist.

On revisiting a galaxy far, far away (Kasdan worked on The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi before The Force Awakens), he said, “I wasn’t sure I wanted to be involved, and I was a little relieved when they said that Michael Arndt had been hired to write Episode VII, because whoever writes that episode – I don’t know what you do with it. But they said, ‘Here are those other stories we’d like to do,’ and the one that caught my attention was a young Han Solo, because that’s my favourite character.”

All we’ve known about this upcoming movie so far is that it will focus on a younger Han, but Kasdan has now revealed that the film won’t be a full-on origins story for Solo. “It will not be ‘Here’s where he was born and this is how he was raised’,” said the writer/producer. “I think what it will be is what was he like 10 years earlier – maybe a little earlier, you’ll get a glimpse. But Kurosawa once said the heroes are the ones that are still changing and the villain are locked and petrified into what they are, and Harrison embodies in Force Awakens someone who is still not settled on who he is.”

The untitled Han Solo film is one of three Anthology movies being planned for release over the next few years, with these films being sandwiched between the new trilogy of movies. First up is Gareth Edwards’ Rogue One: A Star Wars Story at the end of this year, with the Han movie currently looking at a 2018 release. As for the third Anthology film, the details on that are sketchy right now, with rumours suggesting that it could possibly focus on either Boba Fett, Yoda, or maybe even Obi-Wan Kenobi.
