With the trailer having arrived earlier in the week for Independence Day: Resurgence, we now know the fate of Steven Hiller, Will Smith’s character from the first movie.

Ever since Roland Emmerich announced his plans for an Independence Day sequel, there was a buzz about whether Smith’s Hiller would be back or not. Now that the film is set for a release next year, Steven Hiller will not be making an appearance, and we now know why.

With the film’s viral website live and detailing an alternative history of the Earth after what happened during the 1996 movie, there’s a slide that confirms the death of Smith’s character.

The blurb that accompanies the slide, which is dated April 27th, 2007, reads, “While test piloting the ESD’s first alien hybrid fighter, an unknown malfunction causes the untimely death of Col. Hiller. Hiller’s valor in the War of 96 made him a beloved global icon whose selfless assault against the alien mothership lead directly to the enemy’s defeat. He is survived by his wife Jasmine and son Dylan.”

Whilst Smith won’t be returning for the sequel, Vivica A. Fox is back as Jasmine Hiller. Jessie Usher will be playing Dylan Hiller. They’re joined by a cast that includes Liam Hemsworth, Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Brent Spiner, Sela Ward and Maika Monroe.

Independence Day: Resurgence is currently set for a June 24th, 2016 release.
