Devastating news for fans of TWIN PEAKS: David Lynch will no longer be directing the new series of the much-loved 90s show.

Following rumours yesterday that the series had been cancelled, the director confirmed in a series of tweets last night that he has quit following disagreements with cable network Showtime over the show’s budget.

Lynch said, “… Showtime did not pull the plug on TWIN PEAKS. After 1 year and 4 months of negotiations, I left because not enough money was offered to do the script the way I felt it needed to be done. This weekend I started to call actors to let them know I would not be directing. TWIN PEAKS may still be very much alive at Showtime. I love the world of TWIN PEAKS and wish things could have worked out differently.”

Rumours that not all was well in the world of TWIN PEAKS had been rife for a few weeks after Lynch publicly raised doubt about the series’ future. These rumours reached fever pitch on Sunday, with a number of statements made by attendees at LA’s Wondercon convention. These were supported by various cast members saying on social media they’d heard the project was not going ahead.

Showtime still seem to be holding out hope that the problems can be resolved. “We were saddened to read David Lynch’s statement today since we believed we were working towards solutions with David and his reps on the few remaining deal points,” the company said in a statement on Sunday night. “Showtime also loves the world of TWIN PEAKS and we continue to hold out hope that we can bring it back in all its glory with both of its extraordinary creators, David Lynch and Mark Frost, at the helm.”

Neither series co-creator Mark Frost, who has written the revived series with Lynch, or star Kyle MacLachlan have yet confirmed whether they’ll be staying with the show.

Whatever happens, David Lynch is an integral part of TWIN PEAKS, and a series without him is unlikely to please fans who’ve waited patiently since 1992’s FIRE WALK WITH ME for more TWIN PEAKS.
