Channel 4's colourful and brutal conspiracy thriller UTOPIA is being remade by one of America's most respected filmmakers, David Fincher. This is relatively old news, yet recently the director has confirmed that he will in fact take the reins on each episode of the first series, differing from his momentary involvement with Netflix's HOUSE OF CARDS. Fincher will adapt the show for HBO, along with GONE GIRL creator Gillian Flynn.
For those readers who are not aware of UTOPIA and its unique identity; the narrative follows a cluster of individuals who come together through the discovery of a dark manuscript, named The Utopia Experiments. The document itself is said to predict the world's disasters and the group's knowledge of this brings them to the attention of The Network, a clinical entity in the form of a murderous organisation. What follows is a bloodthirsty, often surprising and thoroughly gripping adventure.
Discussing his opinion of the UK show, Fincher notes "I like the world, I like the characters and I love Dennis Kelly's honesty and affinity for the geeks. I've always been a bit of a junior conspiracy theorist because I don't have time to connect all of them, but its great to see that somebody has!".
So, with the man behind ZODIAC, SEVEN and FIGHT CLUB reaching out to T.V storytelling once again, we can look forward to a bright and exciting future on the small screen. However, with the original UK show only just finishing its second series a number of weeks ago (and potentially carrying on for another series or two), Fincher has a mighty task ahead of him to make this project stand out and be counted. Best of luck sir.
