With a whole host of further jaunts to a galaxy far, far away already planned, a further new series of films have been announced.

Lucasfilm has revealed that David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have been hired to write and produce a new strand of Star Wars movies. Benioff and Weiss, of course, are the creators of HBO’s Game of Thrones. For this new set of films, they’ll be developed separately to both the main saga of pictures that are currently up to last year’s The Last Jedi and also to the previously-announced new trilogy that Rian Johnson has been tasked with developing over the next several years.

On this news, Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy enthused, “David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today. Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly excited.”

For their part, Benioff and Weiss added, “In the summer of 1977 we travelled to a galaxy far, far away, and we’ve been dreaming of it ever since. We are honoured by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of Game of Thrones is complete.”

As ever, expect more on all things Star Wars as these projects continue to develop.
