It seems that wherever you turn these days, there’s constant speculation over Bond, James Bond. And it’s now being reported that Daniel Craig’s days as 007 are definitely, definitely, definitely at an end.

Courtesy of Daily Mail (so take it with a pinch of salt), sources close to the Bond franchise are saying that Craig is completely “done” with playing Britain’s greatest spy. This news comes hot on the heels of bookmakers stopping any further bets on Tom Hiddleston becoming the next Bond.

Craig has been playing 007 since 2005, with him having starred in four films that took home over $2 billion at the worldwide box office. Despite being the highest-paid actor to play Bond, it’s believed that MGM was prepared to offer the 48-yeard old a huge new deal to return for two further outings. To date, Craig has taken home £38 million for his four turns as Bond, and the studio recently offered him a figure in the region of £68 million for just two more films.

This, of course, is on the back of the actor saying that he’d rather slash his wrists than return for another Bond following Spectre. That statement was quickly brushed off by Craig and played down, with stories even suggesting that he was already contracted for at least one more 007 outing. Since then, though, MGM execs have reportedly given up on the notion of Craig playing James Bond again, particularly as the actor has regularly cited recurring knee problems from a Spectre fight scene. The studio also pushed back the next Bond movie due to Craig signing on for a twenty-episode adaptation of Jonathan Franzen’s Purity.

It seems as if everything is falling into place now for Daniel Craig’s Bond days to have finally come to an end, and the bigger question remains over who’ll fill the 007 void. As mentioned, the ever-charming Tom Hiddleston is the out-and-out favourite at this point, although there are also still those reoccurring rumours of Idris Elba to tackle the role.

As ever, expect more on the Bond front as this all develops.
