As Universal’s new shared monster universe continues to take shape, the studio has brought in Dan Mazeau to pen the screenplay for Van Helsing.

The Tracking Board broke the news, with the Wrath of the Titans writer to pen this new take on the legend of famed monster hunter, Van Helsing. Mazeau has been a part of Universal’s writers room for their new monster movie-verse, and he replaces Eric Heisserer and Jon Spaights on Van Helsing.

The character of Abraham Van Helsing began life way back in 1987 in Bram Stoker’s famed Dracula. Serving as the greatest foe of Drac, Van Helsing was a fearless vampire hunter whose life mission was to rid the world of the infamous bloodsucker. Of course, over the years Van Helsing has undergone several changes and we’ve been given many different incarnations of the character, including a 2004 movie starring Hugh Jackman.

Where Universal’s new shared monster universe is concerned, first up is Alex Kurtzman’s The Mummy. Released this June, the film will see Tom Cruise battling Sofia Boutella’s titular monster. That film will also reportedly see Russell Crowe’s mystery role revealed as being that of Dr. Henry Jekyll of Jekyll and Hyde fame. Elsewhere, Johnny Depp is signed on to headline a new take on The Invisible Man, Javier Bardem will play the monster in a new Frankenstein, Dwayne Johnson is wanted to star in The Wolf Man, and Angelina Jolie is being sought to star in and direct a new Bride of Frankenstein.
