With Universal developing their shared world of classic monsters, some interesting news has come out in regards to The Mummy.

The Hollywood Reporter has word that the upcoming Mummy movie may actually centre on a female monster. The outlet adds that casting is currently underway for the titular role, with the studio open to either a male or female monster. Depending on the sex of the Mummy itself, there are two different approaches in place for how the film will play out.

This new Mummy will be directed by Alex Kurtzman from a Jon Spaihts script, and it’s currently set for a March 24th, 2017 release. Following that, another Universal monster movie is planned for March 2018 and the current plan is for the studio to explore a world inhabited by the likes of The Mummy, Dracula, The Wolf Man, The Creature from the Black Lagoon, Frankenstein’s monster, et al.
