With Wes Craven sadly no longer with us, and, let’s face it, after Scream 4 didn’t quite hit the heights that fans were hoping for, it seemed as if all hope of seeing a fifth entry in the cinematic Scream franchise was lost. Discussing that very topic, star Neve Campbell and writer Kevin Williamson have been speaking to ET Online.

When Scream 4 hit cinemas five years ago, the initial plan was for that to be the start of a new trilogy of films. Since then, we’ve seen two seasons of MTV’s Scream: The TV Series, but could we see a return to the big screen for the infamous Ghostface?

Playing down the idea, Williamson said, “Wes and I, when we were starting Scream 4, we had plans for Scream 5 and 6. Now without Wes, I feel like you have to sort of answer the questions of how and why, and I don’t know how to do it without Wes and I don’t know why to do it.”

Campbell added, “It would be tough to do it without Wes. His vision was so clear and he was so good. I think it would be painful. It doesn’t mean it would never happen, but it would be challenging. Nobody is talking about it at the moment.”

So, will we see Scream 5? Likely not. But it seems that a fifth entry for one of modern horror’s more beloved franchises isn’t being completely ruled out just yet. If you ask us, though, some things are just best left as they are, and an argument could very easily be made that the series went too far by doing a fourth film, let alone heading into the territory of fifth and potentially sixth movies.
