It’s safe to say that the cinematic TRANSFORMERS and G.I. JOE franchises firmly split opinion amongst us at STARBURST HQ. Whilst there’s certainly a place in the market for ‘blowing shit up repeatedly,’ the Michael Bay-helmed Robots in Disguise efforts slowly stamped on the childhoods of many of us here. Still, the TRANSFORMERS films have proven to be a hit, whilst G.I. JOE: RETALIATION did decent numbers itself. Now producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura has hinted that a cinematic crossover between the two franchises could very well happen at some point.

Speaking to Games Radar about such a possibility, Bonaventura said, “I don’t think they’ve run out of stories yet. I think later on that’s a possibility but I don’t think in the near future at all. It’s not something we talked about either. You know, there’s a lot more story to be told in both cases. I think if in some moment we all think, ‘You know what, it’s time to bring the two of them together’ then we’ll do that, but I think they’re strong enough to exist on their own.”

Despite Marky Mark getting generally praised for the job he did as the one of the key human elements of TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTION, Mark Wahlberg has already confirmed he will not be returning for another TRANSFORMERS outing. Right now, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson is seen as box office gold, so importing his Roadblock character and a few others from G.I. JOE could very well prove to be a clever move if Paramount did decide to pull the trigger on such a movie.

For now, it looks like TRANSFORMERS and G.I. JOE, both owned by Paramount, will be pursuing their own paths, although who knows what’s round the corner for the two action-heavy franchises.
