Alpha

In today’s Not-Sure-How-We-Feel-About-It news, Fox Nation is reporting that Spider-Man will meet the Robin to his Batman in the pages of Amazing Spider-Man #693. But don’t expect a mini-me version of Peter Parker to run around in similar red and blue footie pajamas and call himself Spider-Boy. Spidey’s new partner in crime-fighting will bear the name Alpha and his origins are close to home for the iconic webslinger.

No longer a photographer for the Daily Bugle, Peter Parker now works as a scientist in a research facility where 15-year old Andy Macguire gets zapped by one of Peter’s own inventions. The lab accident results in great power, which Peter insists Andy use with great responsibility. Spidey takes Alpha under his wing in an unprecedented move for the notoriously solo vigilante.

Marvel’s Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso said: “Part of it is that Spider-Man is grown up. He’s older, more seasoned, but young at heart. He’s still a young man, but he’s been around. It’s interesting because it flips the paradigm. Teen hero Spider-Man is now responsible for this teen hero sidekick. He’s responsible because one of his inventions caused this kid to get his powers. He’s directly responsible for the responsibility this kid now has with his new powers. He feels he has a responsibility to make sure this kid walks the right path, which won’t prove easy.”

To read more about the adventures of Spider-Man and Alpha, be sure to check out Amazing Spider-Man #692, on shelves this August. A fully costumed Alpha is featured on the cover of September’s Amazing Spider-Man #693.
