Oh dear! Just when you thought that Marvel could do no wrong they inadvertently annoy one of comicdom’s greatest creators. (Look, just forget about the initial half of the first season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. ok! I mean it’s much better now. Honest guvnor!)

Recent Marvel solicitations have had us believe that Hellboy creator, Mike Mignola, was providing the variant cover to the first issue of the Scottie Young Rocket Raccoon series. Young had indeed approached Mignola about the project but Mignola declined.

“I was never contacted by Marvel about doing this cover,” he told Bleeding Cool. “The artist asked if I’d do a cover and I said no. Pretty surprised that Marvel would announce a cover without someone from editorial contacting me – not to mention that I never told anyone I would do it.”

Marvel VP CB Cebulski admits that they did jump the gun on this one: “This misinformation was due to a miscommunication on our end here at Marvel. We got excited and a little ahead of ourselves when Skottie reached out to Mike in hopes of him possibly contributing a variant cover to Rocket Raccoon.”

“We offer our sincere apologies to Mike and his fans for us simply dropping the ball here and mistakenly including his name in any solicitation materials. We’re all huge fans of his work and meant no disrespect.”

Mignola’s most recent work for Marvel was a variant cover for 2011’s Annihilators #1.

Young’s Rocket Raccoon will debut this weekend on Free Comic Book Day 2014 before Rocket Raccoon #1 is unleashed July 2nd.
