It might not be the follow-up we were hoping for – it’s long been a dream of this writer at least that we’d one day see a LABYRINTH sequel – but until that day comes this will do nicely…

Comics publisher Archaia have revealed they are currently working on a prequel graphic novel that will tell the tale of how Jareth (portrayed in the movie by an alarmingly tight-trousered David Bowie) found his way to the Labyrinth and became crowned The Goblin King (stop sniggering at the back).

Excitingly, original creature designer and all round fantasy genius Brian Froud is also on board to oversee the project, which serves to further back up Archaia’s claim that it will remain “completely true to the spirit of the original.”

Archaia have also previously adapted other Jim Henson properties such as THE DARK CRYSTAL and FRAGGLE ROCK.

Manga readers will already know that this isn’t the first officially licensed continuation of the canon, with a popular four part Tokyopop sequel RETURN TO THE LABYRINTH running from 2006 – 2009.

Archaia’s LABYRINTH graphic novel is set to be released late 2012.
